The Oldest Operational Grocery Store in NC
George L. Thompson opened up his mercantile business in Saluda in 1890. Since then, this family-owned business has been providing goods to the fine people of Saluda. Its current location is on Main Street and has been operational since 1940. This is the oldest continually run grocery store in North Carolina. Visitors can enjoy its vintage look and experience a taste of old Saluda.
Thompson’s Store actively sells fresh produce and cheeses, meat market items, gourmet foods, fine wines, local beer, and more. You will find the famous Charlie’s Sage Sausage at the deli. New and unique options are added on a regular basis. Thompson’s Store also carries a selection of official Coon Dog Day merchandise, including T-shirts, ball caps, visors, and sweatshirts. Coon Dog Day has been held for nearly 60 years—celebrates the loyal pet used for many years for hunting.
